About the Walk Against The War CoalitionThe Sydney Walk Against The War Coalition was established in October 2002 by the Palm Sunday Committee, the Sydney Network for Peace, No War On Iraq, and the National Union of Students. It was wound up on August 11, 2003, following the formation of the Sydney Peace & Justice Coalition. Subsequently, the Stop The War Coalition was also formed. Walk Against The War Coalition operated by sponsorship, with each sponsoring organisation having two voting delegates at general meetings. The Walk Against The War Coalition organised the November 30 Walk, which had 30,000 take part; the historic February 16 Walk, with up to 500,000 taking part; the Emergency Protest at 5pm when the invasion of Iraq was launched on March 20, with 20,000 taking part; the subsequent march and rally at the Domain on March 23, with 50,000 taking part; and the Palm Sunday Walk and Rally in the Domain, with 20,000 participating. During this program, the Walk Against The War Coalition raised approx $150,000, mainly from donations at rallies, and spent approx $138,000. Of the $12,000 remaining, 25% was allocated to Iraq emergency relief through Union Aid Abroad and the National Council of Churches / Muslim Aid appeals. The remainder was divided - two-thirds to Sydney Peace & Justice Coalition, one-third to Stop The War Coalition. |
