40,000 Take to Sydney's Streets23 March 2003An estimated 40,000 demonstrators have taken to Sydney's streets as fresh anti-war protests erupted around Australia for a fourth consecutive day since the start of the Iraq war.
Although well down on the numbers seen five weeks ago, when 500,000 Australians participated in massive rallies, the passion and anger of Sunday's crowd was still powerful. The protesters chanted slogans and waved banners, such as "Howard's war - bloody outrage", directed against Prime Minister John Howard and his Government over their decision to commit Australian troops to the US-led war in Iraq. Leading the march were trade union officials, peace activists, left-wing groups and representatives of the mainstream Australian opposition parties including the Greens, Democrats and Greenpeace. Thousands more protesters gathered in Adelaide following similar demonstrations during the last few days in Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and many other cities. CanberraIn the nation's capital, about 5,000 people have converged on Parliament House to protest against the war. Organisers say the protesters have come from 23 cities around Australia, including Perth. Greens leader Bob Brown drew loud cheers from the crowd when he called for the Australian troops to be brought home immediately. AdelaideIn Adelaide around 5,000 people have marched towards Parliament House chanting "no war" slogans. Led by an imitation coffin with the word "RIP" and an Iraqi child painted on its side, a relatively silent procession made its way down the centre of the city. Their anger was voiced mainly through posters and banners, however as demonstrators neared Parliament House chants of "no war" and songs of peace erupted from the crowd.
