Church and community leaders oppose Iraq war01 April 2007Prominent Christian leaders Kevin Manning, Catholic Bishop of Parramatta and Rev Ray Williamson of the Uniting Church, along with Ms Maree O’Halloran, President of the NSW Teachers Federation, will address the Palm Sunday peace rally in Parramatta today, calling for all troops out of Iraq and opposing any military attack on Iran. "The US Congress has now made it clear that President Bush must end his war in Iraq within 12 to 18 months," said former Senator Bruce Childs, a convenor of the organising group, the Sydney Peace & Justice Coalition. "The Australian people always opposed this war, and they have been sadly vindicated by the enormous damage and greater instability suffered in the Middle East. "We call on Prime Minister Howard to acknowledge the huge mistake his government has been part of in Iraq, and to join with the Opposition parties to organise the withdrawal of Australian troops. He must end his political support for the deployment of the US and British armies which are the main foreign forces in Iraq, which is now leading towards military conflict with Iran. We also call on Iran to withdraw any fighters it has deployed in Iraq," said Bruce Childs. Palm Sunday - April 1, 2007Prayers, March and Rally for peace
