Action alert - protest at Bush veto of Iraq War bill
On May 1, 2007, US President Bush vetoed the US$124 billion Iraq war funding bill, because it included a timid troop withdrawal plan. This drama greatly involves us, the Australian people, and the Howard government.

Andrew Wilkie speech at Palm Sunday Rally 2004
Thanks very much for the kind words of support for me today. Unfortunately, though, we're not here to celebrate peace. We're here, I suppose, to recognise war, and in particular the continuing war in Iraq, and that every day more more people are dying, being injured and terrorised in Iraq. That is likely to continue in the foreseeable future until at least two things occur in Iraq.

Fact Sheet 1 - Militarisation of Australia
The Howard Government is pouring billions of dollars into military spending as part of long-term preparations for ongoing conflict, recklessly tying Australia to Uncle Sam's coattails in endless US terror wars.

Fact Sheet 2 - Missile Defence is not Defence
The Howard Government’s decision to involve Australia in research and development for the US missile defence program came without warning or consultation. Yet public debate would seem particularly appropriate since missile defence, whose first US deployments are expected in late 2004, introduces the radical new concept of taking warfare into the heavens.

Fact Sheet 3 - Reforming the United Nations
In the last century over 80 million human beings died in two terrible world wars. The victors of WW II established the United Nations so war would never occur again. However, they also intended to protect their own national interests.

Iran - background briefing
Unlike many other Middle Eastern countries, Iran managed to remain independent throughout much of its history. Today it has a population of about 70 million people. The principal ethnic groups are Persian 51%, Azeri 24%, Gilaki and Mazandarani 8%, Kurd 7% and Arab 3%.

Iran Information Index
Below are links to briefing articles on Iran, and particularly on its controversial nuclear program, and the democratic resistance movement in Iran.

Iran, terrorism and fundamentalism and the global crisis
The nuclear weapons crisis and today’s elections in Iraq are dominating perceptions of the Tehran regime and the concern of democratic forces in Iran.

Randa Abdel-Fattah, Palestine Human Rights Campaign, speech to 2004 Palm Sunday
The imperialist invasion and occupation of Iraq and Palestine continues because our world has no such thing as an ‘international community’. There is only American global hegemony, which is allowed to pursue a reprehensible imperial agenda because countries like Australia and Britain insist on validating all US and Israeli actions and simultaneously devaluing and effacing Iraqi and Palestinian resistance.

Rev Ray Williamson speech at Palm Sunday 2004 Rally
The cost of war is far too great! We are here this afternoon to support one another in saying to the wider Australian community and to this country’s decision-makers that the cost of war is, indeed, too great. Violence breeds only violence - born out of resentment and hatred.

Sharan Burrow, ACTU President, speech to Palm Sunday 2004
Thank you, Australians standing up for peace, I salute you.On behalf of all working men and women, I thank you. We may be small in number, but we are loud in voice. There is no doubt that we face the choice about what the 21st century will look like.

Speech by Ms Rihab Charida, Palm Sunday 2007
There are many reasons why we are gathered here today in unity. One of them is our commitment to peace. Among other things, we are here to say that we will not accept a world without it. As long as there is an absence of peace in Palestine or Iraq, or anywhere else in the world, we will continue to gather and to protest and we will not tire and we will not give in to the terror of imperial power.

Speech by Rev Ray Williamson, Palm Sunday 2007
In a small book, The Gospel according to Peanuts, in one of cartoons, Linus is explaining to Lucy, “Charlie Brown says that brothers and sisters can learn to get along … He says they can get along the same way as mature adults get along … And he says that adults can get along the same way as nations get along … At this point the analogy breaks down”.

Sr Susan Connelly speech at Palm Sunday 2004
We ask about the stupidity and meaninglessness of the suffering and death of so many young people. It appears that we haven't learnt much. We see nightly scenes of the cycle of revenge between Palestine and Israel, one side with sticks stones and suiciders, the other with state-of-the-art military equipment.

The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI)
The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) is a coalition of democratic and secular organisations, groups and individuals founded in 1981 in Tehran by Massoud Rajavi, to lead the Iranian resistance as a viable alternative to the fundamentalist tyranny of the Mullahs.

The Peoples' Mojahedin Organisation of Iran
The Peoples’ Mojahedin Organisation of Iran (PMOI) was founded in 1965, through Iranian universities as a democratic, nationalist and Islamic organisation struggling for the restoration of a democratic and pluralist government in Iran under the repressive regime of the Shah. Since then it has become the largest anti fundamentalist movement in the Middle East.

The nuclear weapons program of the Mullah's regime
The main dynamic of world political interaction with the clerical regime in Tehran is around the nuclear weapons program being pursued there, and not around the shocking human rights and economic situation of the people. This dynamic is being played out in the International Atomic Energy Agency, based in Vienna, and may yet be transferred to the United Nations Security Council.

Trial by US Military Commission – Some Details
The approach of the United States to those it has detained in the ‘war’ on terrorism has varied considerably. First, only one US citizen (Mr Lindh) has been convicted in a US court of offences relating to terrorism. Although Lindh was originally charged with offences including conspiring to kill US citizens during military operations in Afghanistan, under a plea bargain he was convicted of supplying services to the Taliban for which he was sentenced to a lengthy term of imprisonment.
