Action alert - protest at Bush veto of Iraq War billOn May 1, 2007, US President Bush vetoed the US$124 billion Iraq war funding bill, because it included a timid troop withdrawal plan. This drama greatly involves us, the Australian people, and the Howard government. Unfortunately, the Democrats in the US Congress now seem to think that they must compromise with the arrogant, incompetent administration that led the USA and Australia into war, rather than stand up for the voting majority at the last Congressional elections, the troops and the Iraqi people. The US anti-war movement is trying to create a national outcry right now to stop Congress capitulating and simply giving Bush the money he wants to continue the war. We in Australia can add our voice to this outcry. Let's make some noise! Our message is that the political conflict in the United States over the Iraq War means there is no legal, moral or political case to keep Australian troops in Iraq, only John Howard's mis-conceived commitment to support President Bush. Australia should withdraw its troops from Iraq now to hasten the end of the entire war.
But our outcry now will set the stage and build pressure for the next struggle: In the coming days Congress will begin to debate the Defense budget. This will be another key opportunity for US Congress to use its power to end the war and bring all the troops home, now! We'll do our best to keep you posted on these and other developments. Yours, for peace and justice, Peter Murphy www.nswpeace.org You can follow the activity of the US anti-war movement at www.unitedforpeace.org |
